Some composers have long ditched being ‘pure to their genre’ and collaborated with musicians from all over. Sawhney is one example of someone who’s stepped out of the box critics have tried to put him in. Has not been smooth sailing for him though.
The first piece of music I’d heard by Sawhney is a track covered by Jeff Beck for his You Had It Coming album called Nadia [originally from Sawhney’s Beyond Skin album]. It’s a beautiful track that screams and cries out of his guitar. Beck’s called Sawhney the ‘Stevie Wonder of the East’. [original version here]
